The Origination Story: The 11 Chimneys

11 Chimneys was built in the 1930s by Hollywood mogul, Alfred Santell, who directed over 60 films in his career. Santell entertained the Hollywood elite on this property while living here with his family. Santell eventually moved to Santa Rosa at the end of World War II. Since then, 11 Chimneys has been lived in by different walks of life, musicians and characters.

Before Santell built the property, Ancient Native Americans found this site to be deeply spiritual. Archeologists have found several sites where “metates” (stones for grinding) processed foods and herbal medicines. You will be able to find carved holes in many boulders along your walks around the property.

11 Chimneys is nestled among centuries-old oaks, cedars, pines and the unique manzanita trees. This 13 acre compound holds 11 doors, which are all surrounded by impressive boulders and the forest of Idyllwild. The property borders the San Bernardino National Forest to the north and runs along the landmark, Strawberry Creek, to the south.

Enjoy your stay and the peaceful energy of this paradise. Look for deer, squirrels, hawks, birds and the vast wildlife that brings this Town to life. Indulge in the sound of the water streams, inhale the pine-scented fresh air and be in the moment.
